Are you thinking about buying a new car?
Whether you are looking to buy a new or used car, car warranties are an important thing to consider! But what are car warranties and what do they cover?
What is a car warranty?
A warranty is a type of insurance to offer you protection from the cost of repairing your vehicle if it breaks down. All new cars come with a manufacturers warranty. The length of warranty can vary between manufacturers, but usually covers you between 3 and 7 years.
If you are looking to buy a used car, it could still be under its original warranty, but many dealers will offer you a used car warranty if not. Otherwise you can buy a car warranty, known as an aftermarket warranty, but these can come with additional conditions and exclusions.
What does a warranty cover on my car?
Again, this varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but usually covers the repairs for the engine, transmission, steering, suspension, brakes system and ignition system. Generally, they do not cover wear and tear items such as, tyres, brake pads, clutch, batteries, wiper blades or damage to the bodywork.
Some manufacturers will include a list of approved garages and repair shop where you can get your repairs done. So make sure you check through the warranty, including the small to print, to see what is covered and excluded.
It is important to note that a warranty does not cover accident damage, loss or theft. This should be covered by your car insurance.
